Editorial Review

One of the most influential and successful punk bands to come out of Australia, The Living End have made Triple J's Hottest 100 every year since 1997. In that time they've released five studio albums and a greatest hits package that's 10 times platinum. In other words, it's sold more than 700,000 copies. That's quite an achievement in a country of only 21 million people - especially for a rockabilly punk band.

Of course it wasn't always like that. The Living End first started performing around Melbourne in ‘94, getting a break when Greenday invited them to play support on a national tour. A couple of EPs followed, but it was their ‘97 double a-side, Second Solution/Prisoner of Society, that pushed the band into the national consciousness. The single spent a record breaking 47 weeks in the charts and went on to become the highest selling Australian single of the ‘90s. Since then, the band has been a mainstay of the local scene, consistently going Platinum, topping the charts and selling out shows. They've also enjoyed considerably overseas success, releasing their albums in the US on Greenday's boutique record label, Adeline.

State of Emergency, released in 2006, saw the band return to the top of the charts after a couple of years absence and sold massive quantities. Having toured the world twice over with that LP, the group have now returned with album five, White Noise. Recorded under ‘difficult' circumstances - Chris Cheney was ready to quit at one point - it's a triumphant return for the group. And the live shows are as blistering as they've always been.
