Editorial Review

For many women in their late twenties/early thirties, Sex and the City is the equivalent of The Phantom Menace. From its debut in 1998, the six-season sexploits of Carrie, Miranda, Samantha and Charlotte on the Manhattan singles scene became a quasi-religion, something women cherished as their own.

Like Star Wars, SATC managed to turn narratives into product, inspiring cravings for Vuitton bags and Blahnik shoes as powerful as lightsaber envy. Also like Star Wars (and unusually for a chick flick), the project has generated its very own rumour mill and spoiler culture, creating a sense of trepidation among its huge following. Will someone die? Will one of the couples break up?

The good news, then, is that SATC: The Movie replicates everything that's great about the TV show, in particular its breathless flitting between relationship realities and romantic wish-fulfillment. There are the laugh-out-loud moments, the bawdy sex romps and the fashionista wet dreams. But the skill of the writing and performances allows these elements to co-exist alongside a moving portrait of the pangs of love and friendship.

New to the mix is a likeable Jennifer Hudson as Carrie's assistant. Also new is an older, if not necessarily wiser, quartet. These women are no longer interested in finding the latest nightspot, and the film makes comic use of the shift in priorities: one of the girls' trademark let's-all-talk-about-sex brunches is given a new spin by the presence of Charlotte's adopted daughter, the dialogue exploring a childish euphemism to the full. Indeed, the best parts of the movie are often the moments when you just get to hang with the characters. It helps that the cast have a back-of-the-hand intimacy, the best scenes going to Parker and Nixon who find touching depth in the darker moments.

Paul: Wow, what a movie! I had a great time watching it. It was the mixure of romantic, comedy and drama at the same time. Highly recommended for couples. (05 July 2008)

boring: Bo-o-ring! Take out 40 minutes and you might have had a half decent flick. Unfortunately those 40 minutes eclipsed the moments of charm that reflected the tv series. (03 July 2008)

Elise: I agree with Tania (19 June 08) Miranda was fantastic and the standout alongside Charlotte. I also have to say that the outfits although fabulous in their own right (and maybe in a fashion museum) were a bit on the ridiculous side. Or could I really be getting so old that I am becoming a total fashion conservative?! Definitely worth watching though just to get a bit more of a SATC fix. (01 July 2008)

Tania: After waiting for the movie to come out, for which felt like forever, and battling my partner for the remote whenever any tiny news review came for the movie, I was somewhat disappointed. Miranda, although not a favourite of mine in the series, was an absolute stand out! I was really looking forward to the Carrie-Big saga, but was really let down by the story line...it lacked so much that 2 and half hours could have easily filled. It was like reading a really fantastic book with a terrible ending???.. (19 June 2008)

Kahlia: I went to see this movie with my girlfriends and cried from start to end lol. Its funny, provocative and intelligent entertainment best movie of 2008!!! (11 June 2008)
